mORFFing Our Lives With Music

Help my students mORFF their musical abilities with some Orff Instruments! This is my first year teaching in a low-income school in Eastern North Carolina. I am an general music teacher at an elementary school. I teach Kindergarten through Fifth grade.

Many of my students come from very broken homes and get the chance to be happy and forget their problems while they are at school. We as teachers, do everything possible to make every moment educational and joyous! I enjoy nothing more then giving these students the opportunity to sing, dance, listen to and create music. At school is one of the only times many of these students will get the chance to be exposed to culture from around the world. What my students really beg to do is play the Orff instruments. However, I only have 3 larger Orff instruments in horrible condition! Which takes more then a class period to let every student share and have a chance to play!

So I would like to provide them with 20 glockenspiels which they will be able to compose with, learn notes, and accompany the songs we sing! The method of teaching using Orff instruments has been around for many years.

The special Orff melody instruments include wooden xylophones and metal glockenspiels that offer good sound immediately. Played together as in a small orchestra, their use helps children become sensitive listeners and considerate participants. With Orff Schulwerk, improvisation and composition start students on a lifetime of knowledge and pleasure through personal musical experience. Learning is meaningful only if it brings satisfaction to the learner, and satisfaction arises from the ability to use acquired knowledge for the purpose of creating. For both teacher and student, Orff Schulwerk is a theme with endless variation. One of my favorite quotes which is my mission was said by Carl Orff "Tell me, I forget, show me, I remember, involve me, I understand." This will give my students the opportunity to be involved in their own learning!
