Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My amazing high school students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or even fourth language. My students are from more than 20 countries and speak more than 6 different languages.
Due to Boston's skyrocketing costs of living, many of my students are living in shelters, group homes or other transitional housing, and some students struggle to focus with so much uncertainty and transition in their home lives.
According to NBC, Boston is the third most expensive place to live in the United States. With no end in sight to the housing crisis, it is vital that I make my classroom a place that is safe, welcoming and trauma responsive for all my students.
My Project
Every year, I have more and more students whose families struggle to make ends meet in the expensive city of Boston. Winter is a particularly challenging month when families have to buy new clothes, boots and pay heating bills.
This collection of scarves, hats and gloves will help students stay warm and healthy this winter.
Thanks to an earlier Donorschoose project, I was able to give hats, gloves and scarves to fifteen students. The only problem was that I was not able to give winter accessories to all students in need.
