More Than Typing Getting Our Fine Motor Skills Back

Help me give my students supplies to enchance their fine motor skills, which has been lost through virtual learning.

My Students

I am privileged to teach a class of 17 amazing second-grade students in a community located in the inner-city. It is one of many schools in our district where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. They represent many beautiful ethnicities and come to school with a love for learning, ready to show others what they've learned and to be part of our classroom family.

During this pandemic, I am very enthusiastic to provide my students with meaningful instruction and needed resources to support their learning now that they are back in the classroom.

Despite our many challenges, my students truly enjoy our time together. They have remained 100% resilient.

My Project

The development of fine motor skills helps children function in their daily lives. Children need opportunities to practice these, just as they would their spelling words or multiplication tables. Arts and crafts are a fun and easy way to practice fine motor skills. Students who lack sufficient development of fine motor skills can benefit from art activities.

One of the most important skills that are developed through art is fine motor development.

During art lessons, children’s small muscles in the fingers, hands, and wrists are exercised and strengthened, helping to make learning to write easier. Craft activities will also improve fine motor skills. Many of these skills have been lost during the students' time at home during virtual learning due to the lack of supplies as well as other reasons.

The materials being asked for purchase in this project will benefit my students by supplying them resources to use their fine motor skills which they have not used during virtual learning. The art supplies, such as crayons, paper, glue sticks, colored pencils, play dough, clay, etc, will help with supplying the necessary resources to enhance their abilities. The craft supplies, such as pots, soil, seeds, butterflies, legos, etc, will not only help with their fine motor skills but will also allow the students to have hands on experiences within science and math.
