Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school strives to give our students the basic needs, such as breakfast and lunch, family counseling, a virtual dentist, clothes and school supplies. Many of the kids who walk into our classrooms are homeless. Yet, just because our kids come from poverty doesn't mean they don't deserve an optimal environment for learning with all the 21st Century innovations.

Coming from a high poverty neighborhood, academic success is crucial to the well-being of kids and their families.

What's more exciting is that my students are fighters and award winners! Despite their economic conditions, our school won the distinguished Gold Ribbon School award. This award didn't come easily. We have hardworking and dedicated families at our school who yearn for a better life.

My Project

This year our school focus is strengthening Common Core Math skills. It's no longer about timed-tests and memorizing. Kids are developing deeper conceptual math ideas that require time and focus. What is a teacher to do?

With Kindle Fires, my students will be able to work independently, accessing innovative online resources, such as Khan Academy, that build on these deeper concepts.

It is a different way to access learning, one that is tailored to their tech-savvy minds. While students work independently on these innovative apps, I will be able to meet with small groups of students to target specific needs.
