This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Books expose children to new language, new thoughts, new ideas, new environments, and new people. This is empowerment at its finest.
The little learners in my class are a group of 3 - 5 year olds, some with disabilities, who love to read more than anything.
They love to play, wiggle more than you can imagine, and are working very hard on learning how we "work" now that we're in "big school". But one thing is certain. The minute we begin reading, either as a class or in small groups, my students calm their bodies and tune in to the story and the reader. They love reading!
My Project
I have requested a writing desk with attached listening center, a table and organizer for writing materials, and supplies to stock our writing center so that my classroom has an area where my children can explore language. Having a more inviting, age-appropriate, reading and writing center would give my students the opportunity to be exposed to the amazing power of reading and writing in a manner that is effective and empowering. These materials would create a space in our classroom for learning language, practicing writing skills, exploring new books, hearing stories, and falling in love with words. And through this love, my students will be better prepared to begin their journey through school...and beyond!
The poor and the affluent are not communicating because they do not have the same words.
When we talk of the millions who are culturally deprived, we refer not to those who do not have access to good libraries and bookstores, or to museums and centers for the performing arts, but those deprived of the words with which everything else is built, the words that open doors. Children without words are licked before they start.
