About My Students

Adult Transition students are young adults who are 18 to 22 years of age who continue to qualify for continued education provided by the school district. They are amazing individuals who choose to be in the program to obtain crucial skills needed for a successful transition from student of a school district to adult life. We focus on the following areas: vocational skills, independent living skills, post-secondary education, interpersonal skills, community participation, and recreation & leisure. Our mission is to provide learning that maximizes economic and social independence with the goal that every student becomes an active, contributing member of the community.

We have a student in the class with a visual impairment who also suffers with short-term memory loss. The student recalls "being normal" when he was little, riding bikes, playing the piano, etc. Even just from last school year to this year, we've see regression and we are exploring school-based alternatives. In our last meeting, Mom expressed that the student plays the piano at home. Having a portable keyboard with headphones will allow the student to quietly participate in adult-appropriate activities during lunch while not disturbing others. Creating and playing music also gives students with special needs a sense of accomplishment while toning cognitive areas. Studies show that early music education is extremely beneficial to all, because it increases the development of gray matter in the brain and helps improve memory.

In Their Own Words

I would like a portable keyboard for school so I can play music with my headphones after I'm done eating lunch when I have a good day. I know I have some unusual behaviors like picking my lips and making noises that distract others. I want to do better. Thank you for trying to help me.

My mom helped me come up with the idea but I am a good piano player. I would love to show my teacher, job coaches, and friends how good I am. I want to be able to make and keep friends instead of them thinking I am weird. I helped my teacher with this project so we can maybe get one donated.

This project will help me focus on being an adult and adult activities. It will make others like me and see my skills instead of being annoyed with me. It will help me with my memory. It will help me when my aide has to go on lunch so I sit still and don't try to run around the room.
