Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I say "Ready, Set.... (they say "Listen"), one of the first English words they've learned. We sit down and read a story. My sweet bunch is just beginning to develop some literacy skills; some can hold scissors, some can hold a crayon, and some can count to ten....in Spanish!
My students come from Mexican backgrounds with over 95% of our school population receiving free lunch.
Many of the students receive backpacks with food for the weekend. Obesity is very common in my school community. Being overweight is one of the several social issues my school community is facing.
Because we are located in a below-poverty school neighborhood, the majority of the school population, including my students, live with extended families in apartments. This limits their opportunity to be outdoors and experience life outside their home's four walls.
They are excited to be in school, make friends, and learn and I am excited to be their teacher!
My Project
The most common approach to teaching early math skills has been to practice counting numbers just similar as we practice singing the alphabet. This must change by introducing and teaching math in all contexts.
Math is so much more than counting - math involves patterns, number sense, shapes, measuring, comparing, and more!
Math should be fun and interactive. The best way for teachers to “mathematize” their students is to use math in the routines of daily life, either as games or as entertaining ways to solve problems. These materials will provide opportunities to make math fun and make it part of every single day!
