My third graders are bright, funny, creative, and full of energy. They love science, participating in hands-on activities, and reading exciting new stories. When they read there is a quiet murmur in the room until, they stumble across something amazing. That's when the buddy reading starts and independent reading ends.
TES is a Title I school in Washington, D.C.
with over 50% of the population receiving ESL instruction. I teach a multicultural group of students including students who speak Spanish, Chinese, and Russian. These second language learners do not speak English at home and often have limited vocabulary. My students need to be in a print rich environment that will expand their vocabulary and continue to motivate and inspire them to read.
My Project
Science Spin is a magazine that makes reading and learning about science fun. The magazine provides engaging pictures and details about current events around the world. These magazines are a useful companion to our text books and makes difficult texts a lot easier to understand.
Storyworks pairs a fiction and nonfiction article on the same topic.
Both texts are full of enriching vocabulary and detail and they often use text features to aid in comprehension and lots of graphics to breakdown complex topics.
These magazines offer much needed readable texts for my third graders. My school district does not provide enough resources for all students and we have to copy books or scour the internet for texts to read. With this subscription, each of my students would have their own color copy of the magazines and they'd be able to take them home to build their home libraries.
