Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are considered to be "At Risk". At risk means they have been identified as students who are likely to fail school or drop out before they finish their high school careers. The students I teach are students who all struggle with reading. Most of my students have not passed the majority of their STAAR tests since third grade. All of my students are at risk but are also low socioeconomic status.
They are wonderful students who try hard and put forth their best effort every day.
I do not want the label to define them. I want to see these students succeed and beat the odds! They are special because despite their set backs they come to school everyday ready to learn and try their best.
Last year our city was affected by Hurricane Harvey. We did not have school for 2 weeks due to the damage. Some of my students still do not have their homes completely restored. They are considered homeless because of that. My students are special because they have overcome adversity in their personal lives, and continue to try to overcome adversities while at school.
My Project
100% of the students I work with are labeled at risk, and read below their grade level. I will use all of these resources to help fill in my students reading gaps.
The reading board games will be set up as a literacy station.
The leveled readers will be a literacy station in my classroom. My classroom library does not support all the different reading levels of my students. The leveled readers will help build my student's confidence in reading, by allowing them to read on their level.
I want students to feel successful in my room, and know they are more than a label - they are capable!
