As the world becomes more connected through technology, our students need to have access to these tools at school as many don't have access to technology at home.
Our students are a diverse group of five and six year olds from Washington, DC.
Our students learn in a bilingual environment and are not just learning to read and write in English, but also in Spanish. Many of our students are from low-income families and do not have access to many resources, which widens the existing achievement gap.
My Project
In our classroom, we follow the "two-teach" approach to teaching, which means that two teachers are teaching students in a smaller group setting at the same time. English Language learners benefit from this setting tremendously. We are requesting two easels so that students will have space to organize their materials. Students will know how to use these easels to store their materials and will be taught procedures to be able to work independently in our classroom.
We are also in need of more technology in the classroom. Our students are expected to take state-wide assessments using technology in the upper grades, so it is important that we are preparing our students early on. Laptops would be used as a form of instruction as students will be able to access learning through videos and hands-on math and literacy games. It is important to us that we are fostering their love of technology.
Technology changes the way teachers teach.
It offers educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and assess student understanding through multiple means. Technology touches almost every part of our lives, our communities, and our homes. It is our duty to help close the achievement gap by equipping our students with the tools necessary for academic success. Two laptops would help transform our classroom and put our students on the right path.
