The students from my school live in the poorest Congressional Districts in the country. Many of our students are English language learners who live day-to-day and view coming to this public school as a way to escape their home lives. Some don't even have homes to go to! We try our best to provide students with access to after school programs and technology, but with major budget cuts, we can no longer afford to fund student-centered projects. It has become increasingly difficult to offer services to our English Language Learners as well as our large population of students with Special Needs.
My Project
My students come from homes below the poverty line, and I want them to have the chance to experience something that can influence their lives.
Many of my students are truly enthused about graphic arts and film editing.
My outdated laptop is a poor substitute for the amazing capabilities that many of the newer computers possess when it comes to digital graphics and film editing. They have great short films they've created but trying to edit them is driving them crazy. Give them REAL tools and I know we can make a difference in how they view education and motivate them beyond high school.
With the access to the right tools, many of my more "at-risk for dropping out" students can find something to spark their interest. They've already told me how much they enjoy working on the various projects in my classroom and that sometimes it's the only thing that makes them want to come to school. Give them REAL tools and I know we can make a difference in how they view education and motivate them beyond high school. For many of my students, school is just another thing they have to do until they're old enough to drop out or finally graduate. Many don't look towards college or technical school primarily because they don't know what's out there. These computers, even though it's only two, will open so many doors for them. There are things they haven't even begun to imagine they can do with editing capabilities. I've already seen so much teamwork from them while editing their videos and working on this project...these are real-world
