Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an incredible group of 11th and 12th graders who have a desire to learn, and continue to strive for excellence. We are a Title I school in the East Village in Manhattan, serving approximately 700 students from grades 6-12.
My students love using technology to learn various math concepts, as the visual representations allow them to truly understand what they are doing, and why it works.
It also greatly enhances their level of engagement, both with the topic itself, and with each other.
My Project
Last year I was fortunate enough to receive 5 iPads through DonorsChoose, and it was a huge success. My students enjoyed using the iPads during different class activities. For example, they were now able to visualize complex concepts together with programs like Desmos. In addition, we were able to engage in whole class online activities, like "Kahoot", which also encouraged some meaningful whole class discussion.
While the iPads have had a great impact in my class, they simply are not enough.
My classes are approximately 26 students, and groups of 5 or more students is not very productive. By integrating more iPads into my classroom, students will be able to work in smaller groups and thus grapple with complex topics in a more productive way.
