My students need technology, such as an Osmo and light table, to make our STEM areas more interactive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate for curious 5 year olds.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day curious, energetic and full of life. We start each day with compassion and forgiveness by giving compliments or positive affirmations about the day that is ahead of us.
I teach at a Title I school in Baltimore City where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students have experienced unimaginable hardships and trauma during the course of their short lives. For many, school is the only place where they are able to feel safe, have stability, and feel loved. Our school, is a community school, and also runs a food pantry, an after school program, as well as G.E.D. and parenting classes to help support our families.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and engage with their peers. Many of my students are eager to come to school and reluctant to leave. They want to be in school because they want to learn in an environment that promotes individuality and having a growth mindset.
My Project
All of my students have the ability to learn and reach their full potential if they are provided the resources they need to meet their individual learning needs. I work with students in an inclusion classroom. Each year, there is an increasing number of students who need nontraditional methods of delivering instruction and more choices on how they display their mastery of the standards. STEM activities are a fun and engaging way to integrate math, science, engineering, and math cross curricular into subjects such language arts and art.
STEM materials are not in an isolated part of our classroom but are integrated into all of the centers my students use on a daily basis.
This is because technology gives students multiple ways to practice the skills being taught independently. STEM activities also encourage students to be active problem solvers. The Osmo allows students to work on skills from sight words to addition. The light table and Magformers allow students to explore shapes and engineering in a creative and developmentally appropriate way.
It is developmentally appropriate for students to learn through exploration and play instead of listening to lectures. STEM encourages active exploration and problem solving. My students will learn through collaborating with their peers, using out maker space and independently problem solving using the resources requested.
