Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school in a small community in South Florida. My students come to school with a smile on their face, eager to learn, and ready to work. They are a lively bunch despite the disadvantages and challenges they face each day.
The majority of my students come from homes where parents are rarely seen because they are working dawn until dusk in the fields, 6 days a week.
English is not spoken at home, and a lot of the parents cannot read or write. Older siblings often take care of younger siblings and homework is usually pushed to the back burner until household responsibilities are fulfilled. As a teacher, it is my goal, responsibility, and wish to provide these students with the education and experiences they so desperately want and need, regardless of their circumstances.
My Project
My students LOVE to read and we have an ever growing collection of library books in our classroom. The current bookshelf in our classroom isn't big enough to hold all of our books and we have to have the "overflow" stored in milk crates on the ground. Not only do those books get beat up and kicked around from being on the floor, they don't get used very often because they are hard to get to being packed in so tight. (More books in a milk crate, one less milk crate taking up space!)
I would love to have two bookshelves to add to our classroom in order to have plenty of space for all of our books, but to also have room to add more as we get them.
These shelves will allow my students to view and use all of the books we already have and will keep our reading center a little bit more organized! Our classroom library is already a popular spot in the room because of their love for reading and the flexible seating options so by having these bookshelves, they will love it even more!
