My students need mentor texts that I can read to them. These books are able to do more than just provide students with an enjoyable reading experience, they can teach them to infer, make connections, etc.
My students will be in 4th grade in a small, rural, farming community. Often times they come to me and are below or just approaching grade level for reading & math. Many students do not have the support at home to be successful in the classroom.
My students love to be read to.
I make sure to fit read aloud into our schedule each day because they love to listen to someone else read to them. Even if they are behind, they are able to sit and listen and enjoy a story with their classmates
My Project
My students need more picture books available for them in the classroom. These picture books will serve as mentor texts for my students to read and learn different reading topics including inferencing, text structures, and many more. The school library does not have many of these books, and if it does many times other teachers have them checked out. With my own personal copies I will be able to use them to instruct my students and let them re-read the books whenever they want.
I want my student's love of reading to grow.
I believe by providing them with lots of different texts to read they will find more books that are interesting to them, they will continue to grow a love for reading and learning.
