Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is equipped with a soprano xylophone and a few old glockenspiels. This leads to us only being able to have a few rotation lines, which means that only a few students get to play at a time, while the others practice the part on their laps, which is no fun.
My roughly 400 students are in grades K-5 at a rural elementary school in Texas.
Each class is either on a three or four day rotation to music, depending on the grade. Many of them come from low income families and are native Spanish speakers that would not have the opportunity to experience playing any kind of music if they were not at school. There is no doubt that each of them LOVES to play the few keyboard instruments that we have, but they all agree that it is no fun to have to wait in a long rotation line to play one, and with increasing class sizes, the waiting in line part is getting longer and longer.
My Project
Having these four instruments would more than double our keyboard instrument collection. With these instruments my students will have more opportunities to play instruments, rather than practice instruments. The students will participate in various timbre identification/description activities throughout the year, such as how to distinguish between wood and metal sounds, short and long sounds, loud and soft sounds, and high and low sounds, among other things. Additionally, rhythms will be able to be taught on these instruments through playing question and answer phrases, rhythmic reading, etc. Also, we will be able to practice rhythmic and melodic improvisation, creating new and interesting melodic and rhythmic patterns. Finally (but nowhere near the end of the endless opportunities), my students will increase and improve upon their hand-eye coordination.
Please help by donating so that each of my 400 students will have the opportunity to enjoy music by having more time to play and less time to wait.
My students get so excited when I tell them that we get to play instruments that day, so please help them get even more excited about getting to play more and practice playing less! Thank you for your support and any help that you can give to our fabulous elementary music students!
