My students need to interact with each other in informal and social situations through the use of items such as Mega Bloks and LEGO bricks.
My students are busy and inquisitive six and seven year olds who enjoy learning, moving, and playing with their friends. An efficient classroom environment is critical to the success of a classroom. This year I am incorporating flexible seating options and am pleased by how my students are quickly adapting to the various choices made available to them. They are also engaged each day by materials that encourage them to laugh, create, build, and imagine. Beginning the day with opportunities for such learning sets a mood of community, respect, sharing, and cooperation.
After beginning the year explicitly modeling social skills – how to say excuse me, how to ask to join a group, how to play nicely on the playground, how to walk by someone without touching them, I realized that my students would need more opportunities to practice these skills in order to master them.
I began using morning tubs containing materials that would excite any 6 year old, but would require sharing, cooperation, and patience.
By adding additional materials, such as Legos, magnet tiles, PlayDoh, and building blocks, students will have the opportunities to collaborate on what they choose to build and how they choose to play. Students would also be eager to come to class each morning, knowing that they were going to start their day playing with their friends using engaging materials.
Play sets the foundation for our later interactions with the world and must be modeled correctly and consistently in order to be mastered successfully. By giving my first graders daily opportunities to share, play, and interact, they will better understand how to adapt to various situations as they are encountered in life.
