Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read picture books, they even love to have books read to them. They enjoy looking at the illustrations and they love to hear a great story. I want to use this love of literature to make connections to the lessons that we are learning in science class.
I teach in a low socioeconomic area in Greenacres, Florida.
We are a Title 1 school. My student population is very diverse with many low income families. My parents work hard, but purchasing basic school supplies is not easy for many of them. My students love reading, but struggle with some of the science skills and concepts we are learning. This year in science, we are working hard to practice our reading and writing skills while learning a lot of science content too. I want my students to be able to read great literature, while also learning about science and the world around them.
My Project
I have heard great things about the Picture-Perfect Science series of books. I have requested this along with many of the children's books that go along with the lessons. The book explains how to use well-illustrated books to introduce students to complex scientific concepts. Books are a great starting point for students who often struggle with abstract concepts. I think these books will help raise student interest in every unit because students will be hooked once they see the exciting literature that we can connect to our standards-based science content. This award-winning book presents lessons, complete with student pages and assessments that use high-quality fiction and nonfiction picture books to guide hands-on science inquiry. I want to start these lessons as soon as possible in my class, so having the guide along with the books contained in the lessons will allow me to get my students started right away.
Recently, I went to a training on how to use Picture-Perfect Science Lessons in my classroom.
I really enjoyed this training and wanted to be able to use it in my classroom right away. So, I have requested this manual along with many of the children's books featured in the lessons. The book explains how to use well-illustrated books to introduce students to complex scientific concepts.
