Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are brilliant 5th and 6th graders, who dream big every single day! They can be anything they want in this world, and they will (and they know it!). They problem-solve and collaborate with peers on a daily basis to make the most of their school day.
Our school is a Title I school, where nearly 90% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My students come from a culturally rich community that has many immigrant families. These families are the heart and soul of the community!
My students are a part of our 1-way Dual Language program, which means they are bilingual in English and Spanish! They love developing both languages through high-interest books! My students and I believe that being bilingual is awesome!
My Project
A teacher's job is to prepare students for their future and a part of that is teaching them to effectively use technology. If we are to do this, students need to have access to technology in the classroom. However, technology is quickly advancing. Simply being able to use a computer is no longer enough. Students need to experience different types of technology that allow them to create and invent, such as robots.
Ozobots are small robots that students program to perform different movements and tasks.
They will engage students and make them excited about STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). I will be able to incorporate STEM more frequently in class with access to these powerful little robots! We currently have three Ozobots, however with 26 students, it is difficult for every student to have an adequate amount of time to explore and create with the robots. Receiving additional Ozobots will allow me to create smaller group sizes when learning with the robots.
Ozobots allow students to develop coding and computer science skills that will prepare them to be the next generation of engineers and inventors. Ozobots also provide cross-curricular opportunities. For example, students can code the plot of a text or create angles for Math using the Ozobots. This not only addresses state standards and engages students, but also incorporates STEM.
I want to help my students become competitive and productive members of our society. Introducing them to Ozobots and the opportunities of engineering will help them recognize all of the amazing opportunities that are out there for them! I especially look forward to helping the girls in my class access and explore Ozobots so they feel empowered and ready to take on any STEM career opportunities presented to them in the future.
