This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Meet the Class of 2028, the future college graduates and change agents of the world. My 6th Grade Advanced Work Class is driven to achieve. I am blessed to teach some of the smartest, most hardworking students in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston. They bring my room to life with their ideas, questions, and debates.
Each day, I am struck by the profound wisdom that these 6th graders have to offer.
As an urban public school teacher, my students face many challenges beyond school. Additionally, middle school can be a difficult adjustment for kids, both academically and socially. I want to make sure that they have every resource they need to be successful. With the right tools, I know there is no limit to what my students can accomplish!
My Project
My students love reading books about mythology! We are about to begin our unit on “The Odyssey” by Homer and we need more mythology texts for our class library.
What does it mean to be a hero?
When is power used for good? For evil? While these stories were created thousands of years ago, their themes still resonate in today’s world. Mythology helps readers to examine some of life’s most important questions.
Myths are also a powerful way to learn about the past. They provide readers with an appreciation for ancient beliefs and traditions.
The texts that I’m requesting will complement “The Odyssey.” Students will be able to learn more about the Greek gods and goddesses that appear in the text. With your help, I can make my favorite unit of the year even more special with these mythology texts!
