My Students
My students are all in special education with a wide array of abilities and backgrounds. They all read below grade level and struggle with math. Some of my students have stable and supportive families where they learn common sense and financial literacy. Some of my students do not and come to me with no clue about banking, budgeting, or bills.
I want all of my students to graduate financially literate and able to manage their own finances so they can live more independently and make smarter choices.
I've never had students so engaged as they were my first year of teaching Consumer Education. My students want to know about money and want to feel comfortable handling their own money. Most of them have grown up in families that struggle financially. A solid financial education will help them feel more confident and less likely to be taken advantage of or repeat money mistakes.
My Project
A good chunk of my students will work in retail at some point in their lives. Because all of them struggle with math, cash drawers and fake money will help them learn how to make change without relying on a register or calculator. With budgeting envelopes, I will be able to show different ways people budget and let students try them out. Books on financial literacy will allow for a more diverse curriculum and extra opportunities for learning. Games will allow for fun, engaging reviews of concepts.
All of these materials will afford for more hands-on, authentic learning experiences.
It is hard for most of my students to put their knowledge into practice. These items will help students practice what we learn and be more prepared for life after high school.
