My students need another iPad to practice and master basic addition and subtraction facts.

If you were to visit my classroom, I guarantee you would not want to leave! My students are some pretty impressive young individuals. You would be in awe of them. I work with 2nd and 3rd grade students in a high poverty/high crime area. The challenges many of them face outside of school are unbelievable, but it doesn't stop them in school. Some might write my students off, but they haven't a clue what my students are capable of.
The students I teach are simply amazing!
They demonstrate perseverance and grit daily. They have a superior work ethic along with a determination to succeed. I'm certain that most days they work harder than me. It is only fair to them that I provide everything they need/want to be successful in my classroom. They truly deserve the best of everything! They earn it over and over and over with their dedication to school.
Do you remember memorizing addition and subtraction facts with flashcards? Do you remember how incredibly boring it was?! Why did teachers do that to us? They did it because they had nothing else to offer. Fast forward to 2018...we have iPads and students love them! They have become an essential tool for the classroom.
With iPads, my students WANT to practice their facts.
Students who are struggling with addition/subtraction facts usually keep struggling because they don't practice. The iPad apps that are available to practice fact fluency are engaging and super motivating. Students can set goals and receive virtual rewards when they meet their goals.
Being able to recall simple math facts quickly is essential when doing more complex math. With quick recall and automaticity of facts students free up their working memory and can devote it to problem solving and learning new concepts and skills.
Math anxiety starts when children fall behind and can’t keep up. I don't want my students to have math anxiety! An iPad in the classroom will give my struggling students an opportunity to engage with technology to help them master their addition/subtractions facts so they can move on to higher-level math. I can't wait to see their progress! Thank you for considering this project.
