My students need engaging math activities reaching a variety of levels and learning styles that will encourage mathematical thinking and a love of mathematics.

Do you like mathematics? Do numbers scare you? Oh, and the "dreaded" word problems! I believe that children can love mathematics and beg for more math time! Math can be fun and our children can excel in math.
Our school is in a major, predominantly low-economic, public city school system, and has a title 1 status.
However, we are very unique! Our school is considered an "Optional" school for academics and technology, but we are also a neighborhood school. This creates a VERY diverse student population, both culturally and academically. Because of this, we are challenged, as teachers, to meet the needs of all the students. We go beyond "all students can learn" and offer enrichment to all students. I am completely convinced that students can learn to love math if the the lessons and practice work are fun, exciting, and hands-on. Children should be encouraged to take risks and explore the world of numbers. First graders are special. They have no preconceived notions about mathematics. Through games and problem solving activities, first graders will learn to love math and be our future mathematicians and logical thinkers!
All the activities and games I have chosen are developmentally appropriate for first graders, yet provide a wide range of challenging activities to meet the needs of a wide range of abilities. The children are actively involved both physically and mentally. I specifically chose games/activities that encourage higher level thinking and problem solving as well as tools to learn basic facts. My first graders love to work with a partners or small groups and they learn so much from each other! They share strategies for problem solving and challenge each other to be more creative thinkers. Hopefully, there is a little Bill Gates sitting in my classroom right now!
Math will not be intimidating to my first graders.
With the activities and games I have requested, I can enrich and challenge my students and they will be begging me, "More math, please,Mrs. R!"
