I teach in a small community at a one-section, Pre-K-12 school with a population of about 380 students. Most of my second graders have been together since preschool and will most likely graduate together in another ten years. They function very much like a large family and keep me on my toes every single day!
Second graders are curious about everything, excited to learn, and constantly moving.
We change gears frequently in our classroom in order to keep everyone focused and engaged! I could not imagine spending my days among a more wonderful group of people than my 21 students. They are truly amazing and inspire me to be a better teacher and person.
My Project
My second grade students love math time in our classroom! We have ten weekly math workstations, where they get to practice their skills in fun, hands-on ways. Key skills for second grade learners include: addition and subtraction fluency, counting money, telling time, identifying and classifying geometric shapes, and problem solving.
My students need more resources to practice these important skills together at our math workstations!
I have requested a tub of geometric solids that my students can manipulate to count sides, vertices, and edges. I've also requested operations and algebraic thinking file folder activities, and a set of roll and solve math games. These resources will help my students learn and grow with problem solving, fact fluency, and money skills.
I know that when my second graders are having fun, they don't even realize how hard they are working, and how much they are growing!
