We are the second largest school in our district that directly impacts our military community along with low income and ESE communities. We house grades PK- 8 in our buildings, including the second highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military. This makes us a population that serves military families and military students. Our school directly impacts the military community it is built around. These demographics make our school a very diverse population.
Our school is also a Title I school, which means the majority of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunches.
Some are displaced while others are homeless. To give these students the opportunities they all deserve, we must provide a quality learning environment. Being Title I, those essentials are few and far between. Our students are bright, they are resilient, and they strive to be the best they know how to be, but they also want to be more than that. It is our responsibility to make those things happen to them no matter what it takes.
My Project
We are still getting displaced children from our horrible hurricane this past year. We are in desperate need of additional materials so that all of our students can utilize every learning center. Currently have a classroom that is only prepared and was only ready to serve the normal and allotted class size. We have surpassed this number three times over. The kids need the additional calendar learning center, and weather tracking weekly calendar to create an additional center for daily activities in Math and ELA. We also are in desperate need of additional dry erase markers to use on the additional wished for dry erase paper covers. The kids write on these plastic covers in order to not only do cooperative work but also learn the importance of conserving paper. These are used in every subject but we do not have enough. The laser pointer is used for pointing to words, letters and all sorts of activities. We only have one at this time. The pointers also are passed during whole group learning activities to highlight areas of importance. This is a very simple way to incorporate the children into our whole group lessons by allowing them to "point" to the correct choice or let us know about something they are wondering about.
Resources are low and enrollment is high.
Our kids need and deserve the chance to have everything they need. These items are simple but they are of great importance to us!
