I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens from Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area. We are an urban beach town, and we serve a diverse student body. The primary mission of our school and district is to achieve excellence through equity.
I teach both Spanish and English Language Development at the middle school level, and my goal is for all of my students to grow in language proficiency, literacy, and autonomy.
My advanced English Learners are building increased reading stamina to improve their literacy and boost their reading comprehension. I have found that providing them with a wide variety of new and diverse books has improved their interest and engagement during Independent Reading time. Your donation will help me continue to provide them with the hottest new releases in Young Adult and Middle Grade fiction!
My Project
This project brings our classroom library's collection of the 2019/2020 Project LIT book selections to completion.
Because my students are 7th and 8th graders, they tend to fall between the two categories of Middle Grades selections and Young Adult selections, so my goal is to provide them with all 40 Project LIT bookclub selections--20 MG and 20 YA books!
The excitement that students experience when we receive a new shipment of books is palpable. They are especially drawn to the incredible titles that the Project LIT Bookclub selects, which are curated and voted on by a nation-wide community of educators and book lovers. Your donation will help me put more of these diverse, relevant, fresh new books into the hands of my students.
The goal of this project is to increase students' access to high-quality, culturally relevant books. These books allow ALL students to see themselves in the pages. They communicate to ALL students that their voices & their stories matter—that THEY matter. Some of these books spark difficult but necessary conversations and help promote empathy and kindness by inviting us to look at the world through a different lens. Above all, I hope these books cause students to fall in love with reading again, or for the first time.
