More Labs, More Learning, Less Time Wasted

My Project

My students love labs. That's convenient because experimentation and observation are the best ways to learn science. These pursuits lead to a true understanding of concepts and thought processes rather than simply rote memorization. Being technical school students, the majority of my young scientists are hands-on learners. That's even more convenient since labs are definitely hands-on! Plus, labs are fun; enjoyable learning is a strong motivator.

So we all agree that labs are essential!

Time is at a premium in any school, but especially in a technical school. Students spend only half of the year in academics; the other half is devoted to education in their chosen trade. Yet, somehow, we need to master a full year of science in 90 days. That means every second counts. Students really do not have the time in their day to wash lab dishes. I try to keep up, but facing 500 dirty test tubes at the end of a jam-packed day is a daunting proposition. Inevitably, I need to consider clean-up when I decide how many labs we can do each week.

Dishwashers are standard equipment in science labs; every other school I know of has at least one. Our school is so old though that the labs have not been renovated since before dishwashers were readily available. We have many workarounds for the antiquated facilities, but the lack of a dishwasher is a major hindrance. Should I spend hours washing dishes rather than meeting motivated students for extra help? Or should I postpone correcting papers with timely feedback? Maybe I can skip those good news phone calls to families or the conference with the social worker about an at-risk youth... No, those are all essential. A dishwasher would allow me to do everything and maximize learning opportunities for my students.
