Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to be hands on, but when there aren't enough materials it is frustrating to them. "Music gives wings to the mind and flight to the imagination" but without enough materials, their mind can't take flight and reach new destinations.
My students come from a high poverty area often filled with crime, hunger and little support at home.
They come from an area of the city that is known as being the roughest and the students deal with too many adult problems outside of school. My school works towards allowing the students to be kids and strives towards helping them to reach their potential and beyond in any way we can. All students are on free breakfast and free lunch and when they are able to become hands on in the classrooms, their hunger for learning becomes greater than their hunger for food.
My Project
Through the use of these new Alfred Group Piano method books, students will be able to work as a whole group and individually at their own pace. Currently, I have 6 keyboards in the classroom and with the inclusion of 2 more, I can increase my group size allowing for more explicit instruction to take place. Students will work individually on the keyboards while the teacher circulates differentiating when needed. The longer extension cords allow for student safety in the room. The USB cables will enable students to play pieces and have them track progress on the computer through a special software. The teacher handbook will allow me to formulate sequential and appropriately timed lesson plans. Students will learn basic music theory, will learn how to read music, incorporate some basic composition and learn proper playing and hand position on the keyboards. Students will increase their musical knowledge and ensemble confidence when playing as a whole group.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom environment greatly.
It will give the students a sense of pride and ownership and will cause them to treat the technology and materials like their own. This will in turn increase their enthusiasm for learning and keeping music in their lives.
