Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We really have something special at our school! I know everyone loves their kids, but we really have a close knit group of caring, bright, tenacious students who I know will go on to do amazing things! I feel very fortunate to be able to work with them!
Many of our kids are first generation college students who are eager to be successful in life, despite any personal hardships they may have had to overcome.
Our school population is seventy-percent economically disadvantaged and sixty-percent Hispanic. Although our area is technically a suburb of Houston, much of our district is still very rural with a lot of poverty. Our program has students taking college classes as early as freshman year, which allows them the opportunity to be able to graduate at the end of four years with both their high school diploma and an Associate's degree. Doing so requires students to have a strong work ethic and a lot of discipline. It is a tremendous feat that truly requires a village of support!
My Project
Last year we moved to a new building that is adjacent to the college campus where our students attend a variety of classes. They are now walking to the college campus from our campus in order to attend those classes, but on rainy days it becomes a mess! Most of them end up getting soaked because they don't have an umbrella of their own. I want to help keep my students dry by being able to provide umbrellas that they can check out on rainy days.
Attendance at their college classes is mandatory, even on a rainy day, but they shouldn't have to get soaked in the rain.
I want to purchase 6 purple umbrellas (our school color!) that students will be able to borrow when the weather is bad. That way they stay dry and comfortable while sitting in class, especially as the weather starts to get colder.
Last year was tough with Hurricane Harvey and a lot of change, so we're doing everything we can to make our school have the best learning environment possible!
