Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been looking for ways to get away from the standard textbook in my 7th grade American social studies class. Although working with documents and images are useful, I still have a ton of ground to cover and would like to use some of the programs that others have created that are more engaging than the regular textbooks but still allow me to cover the ground I need to cover. With this in mind, I would like to get the series of books called A History of Us by Joy Hakim. These are more student friendly books that take students through American history while relating it to their lives. By having books like this that the students are more inclined to read on their own, it will hopefully promote more literacy as well. Because I am working in an inner city school, where we do not have a library as of yet, I would like to have as many items as possible for students to use in the classroom and to push them to read outside of class these other books that are more engaging than the regular textbook. After a few trial runs with excerpts I have copied from these books, I have found that the students are extremely engaged with them and I have been impressed by how much they remember from these selected chapters. Please help me make these 7th graders find their interest in Social Studies and make it a memorable year!
