Help me give my students more interesting informational reading material. These non-fiction texts focus on the importance of Math, Science and Literature. Providing exemplar titles that will build on classroom lessons and help students make real world connections.
We have a vibrant group of students. We are in a rural coastal area just outside of the Marine Corps' Camp Lejeune. Within our diverse population, we have students who have moved frequently and students who have lived here their whole life.
Recently our district was devastated by Hurricane Florence.
In many ways, our students are like other youths across the nation. Within our walls you will find highly motivated students, hard working students, and some who need a little more guidance.
The most striking characteristic of this student population is their kindness. It makes them unique. Despite their differences in motivation and interests they can collaborate and work together. They are respectful, polite and most importantly, they encourage each other.
During the hurricane every school in our district had been significantly impacted. Damage was widespread throughout our community. Some students lost everything, while other students didn't have any damage. Despite the damage and loss these remarkable students have continued to help in the recovery process by volunteering their time and organizing fundraisers.
My Project
These resources will provide equal access across our school to important information in the fields of math, science and literature. All these titles are exemplar texts. Titles like the "The Hot Zone" that examines a real virus threat and how it was contained and "Innumeracy" that discusses the consequence of being mathematically illiterate.
Through enriching texts that connect the curriculum in the classroom to the real world, students will make the realization that what they are learning in school is important and interesting with real world impact!
Our students need more resources and texts that help encourage and motivate them to learn as much as they can now so they can build on that knowledge and use it to change the world.
