it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Althia is an outstanding student who models excellence in her study habits. She excelled in Probability and Statistics Honors last school year. Whether working in a small group or on her own, Althia always dived right in to complete her work. One hindrance for many of Althia's peers, however, is access to the right tools for success. In AP Stats, the graphing calculator is a must have. When noticing that some students did not have a calculator for use, Althia remarked, "Dr. Evans, I wish I could help you get a set of calculators for your Statistics classes." I teach across grades level in a public high school that serves students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
My students need daily access to handheld technology (graphing calculators) in Advanced Placement Statistics. With access to this tool, students will develop statistical proficiency in use of the graphing calculator to solve statistical problems. Daily practice with the calculator will allow my students to increase problem-solving skills in statistical data analysis, which should positively correlate with scores of 3,4, and 5 on the national exam. Earning a 3,4, or 5 on the national AP Stats exam indicates the student has mastered the content of a college level statistics course. Many institutions in the State of Florida and nationwide award college credit when students score 3 or higher on the exam.
In Their Own Words
I want to help Dr. Evans get a set of calculators for the AP Statistics classes. Some students can't afford one, and it makes it difficult for them to understand the statistics without one. If Dr. Evans has a class set of calculators she can loan one to students who can't afford one.

Leaders look for ways to help others. I learned so much in Dr. Evans' class. I want to help other students learn as much as I did. In AP Statistics, students really need the graphing calculator. If they don't have one, then it would help if they could borrow one from Dr. Evans.
I would like to thank Dr. Evans for everything she taught me this school year. She is an amazing teacher. Having extra calculators for her students in AP Statistics will help more students have a better chance of doing well on the AP Stats exam. There is so much to know on the exam and you really don't have time to do the math by hand.
