The diverse backgrounds of the students at my school creates such a unique learning environment for both the staff and the students.
Ninety-three percent of our students are a part of the free and reduced lunch program, and many have difficult home situations.
The resilient students must overcome many obstacles before even stepping foot into the school building each morning with a mind that is ready to learn.
Since students at my school come from a variety of backgrounds, their fitness levels vary a great deal. As the Physical Education teacher, my goal is to get them excited about being physically active and healthier both in and outside of school! I am hoping that this project will achieve those goals!
My Project
These goals can be used in a variety of ways, not just for our floor hockey and soccer units! My students will have the opportunity to learn teamwork and essential life skills that only playing team sports can teach them. Playing team sports is important for every child and those that attend my school are not all privileged enough to be able to join an extracurricular team.
Hockey and soccer are great sports to play to learn those teamwork skills and to become healthier and improve their general fitness.
Not only do we play traditional floor hockey and soccer but with the use of the large scooters, we can add in pillow stick scooter hockey and scooter soccer, which are both huge hits with the intermediate students! The goals will also come in handy during our Field Day in the spring, which is a highlight of any elementary school student's (and teacher's) year!
Many of my students come from environments where basic life skills and fitness basics are not typical in their everyday home life. I have loved being able to give them those opportunities for learning and exposing them to sports and giving them experiences that they would not have otherwise.
