Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is classified as a Title I campus where 100% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Additionally, my campus demographic breakdown is 94% Hispanic, 3% African American, and 3% other. Among these students, 71% are at risk of dropping out, 67% are classified as Limited English Proficient and 98% of my students are classified as low socioeconomic. As a result, many of my students are years behind in both their arithmetic and reading.
Although these statistics may seem daunting, I believe that circumstance should never define an individual and their success.
I believe that dramatic academic growth is a reflection of transformational and rigorous teaching. As a result, my classroom is not only engaging but challenging.
Educators must not only ensure academic success, but they need to empower each student to become agents of change when faced with social inequity. By equipping our students with the necessary tools and resources to navigate and challenge systemic injustices, we can begin building their voices when they become witnesses of injustice occurring in their communities and surroundings.
My Project
This new equipment will make a difference by getting the students consistently involved in physical activity while having fun. We need basketballs, a volleyball set, a bowling pin set and a kickball.
On my campus, the students are not really exposed to a diversity of sports and physical education activities, and my goal as the basketball sponsor this year is to make sure they're more well-rounded in that area.
I want to make a difference in their knowledge of health and fitness that will last them a lifetime. This will also make it easier for them be active at home with their parents, getting the entire family involved. I'm so excited about what this new program will bring.
