Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have taught ME to be a better teacher and learner. They just want to explore, feel validated, feel safe, and be comfortable in their learning environment. They provide the fuel that I need when I come in on a Monday, or when a day or week is particularly difficult. Their drive to succeed for themselves or for me is exactly why I do what I do.
I teach at a Title I school in Virginia where 65 percent of the students are considered economically disadvantaged.
54 percent of them are English Language Learners, and 9 percent receive special education services. Many of my students are also first generation Americans.
They impress me every single day with how hard they work despite the real life obstacles they face inside and outside of the classroom. By making the decision to come to school each day and engaging, they are the reason why I believe in the American dream.
My Project
Students need and deserve choices. I introduced flexible seating this previous school year and watched my students make some great, and not so great, seating choices. I want to see more of that. I want to watch them enjoy school because of something as simple as choosing where and who they seat with.
I'm excited for my students to enjoy their classroom.
A new comfortable rug will open up the floor for readers and writers. Bouncy bands will allow my most energetic kiddos to get their wiggles out, especially on indoor recess days! Overall, I want my students to feel like their classroom is a second home.
