My students need more options for flexible seating to be able to select what works best for them, including saucer chairs, bungee chairs, and floor cushions.
Summer break is here, but I am already preparing for my next group of incoming 5th graders. I will be teaching approximately 22 students. My school is a PK-8 school, which is a school built on a strong history of community. I am excited to meet them and begin establishing a solid, inclusive classroom community of learners. It is amazing to see their growth (as learners and people in general) as they navigate their last elementary school year.
Fifth grade is such a pivotal year for students, and I am honored to be their teacher.
My Project
Two years ago I introduced flexible seating in my classroom and have had great success with two different groups of 5th grade classes. This school year I would like to bring in more options for my new students. This project will introduce my newest group of students to a wider variety of seating options.
Flexible seating allows students not only the ability to move about, but also the voice to self-select where and how they work best.
That’s huge! I have seen engagement, academic ability, and behavior improve due to flexible seating alone. I cannot speak more highly of this approach to teaching and learning!
Options that this project will provide include: meditation cushions, saucer chairs, bungee chairs, and small rugs to distinguish different work spaces.
