This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Because we are an urban, low income district, my students face many obstacles both inside and outside of the classroom. All of our students receive both free breakfast in the classroom and lunch. We also have a high number of English language learners, students who have or who are experiencing homelessness and many other stressors at home. Therefore, I do all that I can each day to make their time at school as stress free, safe, fun, and engaging as possible. In doing this, they are able to truly be their creative, intelligent, and kind selves daily.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. We are an extended learning time school and, therefore, movement, comfort, and independence in where they learn best is imperative. Many times during independent work times or group work time, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. As they move around the room, they are using clipboards, standing tables, and seating options that keep them comfortable. Having these additional options will help them be more engaged and able to learn.
Many of my students have a difficulty sitting for extended amounts of time, and so these seating options will be invaluable to their engagement and learning.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional options to make more effective learning choices. The surf seats will allow my students to use their laptops while sitting on the rug and stay engaged and comfortable. Since these options are are lightweight they can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. The easel will allow me to teach the students in many areas and in many ways that will be comfortable and more engaging and effective. They can also use the easel and therefore the white board markers can be used by the students during those times.
