My students this year are 5th graders from a small rural community. There is high percentage of students who receive free or reduced lunch as well as a large ESL population. All of my students come from very different families, cultures, and ethnicities. In a community where income may be low, love is not.
Despite education's current focus on test taking, I want to show my students that they can also have fun while learning.
They are eager to learn and work hard together in one classroom. Let's help them reach their goals this year in a fun and comfortable way!
My Project
Back in July, I started my FIRST donors choose project for flexible seating for my math classroom. I explained that I have high expectations for my students to be flexible thinkers and work hard. They all come from very different backgrounds and have different lifestyles. They are each unique and they come into MY classroom to all learn the same content. But I don't think they should have to sit in typical classroom desks and this year, that haven't!
Flexible seating has allowed my students to get comfortable and get focused while they collaborate with their peers and learn new topics in fifth grade math.
They have learned the rules for using the yoga balls, wobble stools, and bean bags chairs that we have. They have expressed interest in more seating choices and I think they are not only ready for it, but deserving of it!
