Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

100% of my students qualify for free lunch, and they live in a small agricultural town in central California. Many of my students' parents work in the fields picking fruit or vegetables to provide for their families. Given these odds, my bright, curious 7th and 8th grade students come to school daily ready to learn. Students are often looking for ways to express who they are as they navigate real junior high issues like poverty and violence. Visual art is a powerful medium for students at this age to voice their concerns.

My Project

My plan is for students to ask meaningful questions about an interest, for example immigration, video games, or cosmetics. Then, students will research their questions using reliable sources. Students will read, write, and reflect about the topic they researched. As an artistic extension during station teaching, I want students to use visuals to express their thoughts and feelings about these significant topics. By providing students with equipment to create decals, students will have opportunities to design unique visuals. My hope is that students will use this medium to raise awareness about the topic they researched by either creating designs for t-shirt, hat, or other accessories.
