I am blessed to teach third grade at a wonderful Title I school in northeast North Carolina. Our students are loving, hard working, easily motivated, and care about each other and their success! They thrive on competitions and reaching goals set for them throughout the school year.
Our students get excited, work harder and stay more engaged when they are given options and choices which makes them feel valued and that their interests matter!
We are a diverse school consisting of students and families from various backgrounds and cultures as well as Coast Guard families. They are each unique and have a special way of winning our hearts with their kindness and thoughtfulness. The students and staff at our elementary school have truly become a family to one another!
My Project
This year, thanks to many generous donors, including DonorChoose.org, ESPN, & the Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation, our school has started our first ever running team consisting of almost 75 students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.
This June 1st 5K Color Run will be a great community event where we will be able to focus on exercise, health & wellness with our community, students & families.
The color powder included in this part 3 project will be specifically used for our volunteers at each of the 4 arches to throw at the runners as they pass through the arches to help make the event exciting! The previous powder received has been put into individual bags for participants to use as they complete the 5K.
Our third grade students will be able to see themselves as athletes, runners & teammates during this event. They will also be responsible for calculating the expenses paid for the items needed to run the event, such as the colored powder, balloons, water, and awards. They will learn financial literacy terms such as profit, needs, expenses, economy, withdrawals, and deposits. Students will not only participate in a fun day with their families & our community in which they will always remember, but our third graders will also be working on the math from the event. This culminating 5K Color Run will be a great time for our running club members to show how their stamina has improved throughout the school year and to be recognized for meeting their individual goals. All students will calculate how much their time improved from their first 5K in January.
Thank you for considering our project for resources which will ensure our 5K Color Run will be a successful, colorful, & exciting event to remember!
