Our middle school is a public school in Georgia, that serves a diverse population of approximately eleven hundred students in sixth through eighth grade. Our urban, midtown Atlanta location brings together a wide range of socio-economic, racial and cultural backgrounds. We have students at all performance levels, necessitating differentiated instruction, as well as a large number of students served by special education services. Despite having the largest number of students living in transitional housing of any middle school within APS, we have lost Title I funding. This is a significant financial loss to the school’s operating budget, making it more difficult to fund even the most basic resources like copy paper, ink and school supplies.
However, even with all of our challenges, our dedicated staff and hardworking students consistently produce outstanding work in both academics and in extracurricular activities.
We are proud to be the highest scoring middle school in our public school system.
My Project
In my classroom, we utilize the technology that we currently have in a variety of ways. There are countless programs that can assist students in developing key skills in order to be successful in whichever path they choose later in life, specifically reading and writing. Many of our students come in with deficits in reading, and we are able to use online programs to provide individual instruction that can promote growth in reading by meeting each student where he or she is. There are also a myriad of opportunities for enrichment with students who are already performing well above grade level, such as webquests, online author talks, Skyping with other classrooms around the community to get a better sense of the world as opposed to just our school.
By providing my classroom with five Acer Chromebooks, you are allowing my students the opportunity to greatly expand our classroom walls and let in the outside world.
