My students have so much potential that they aren't aware of. They are bright individuals that are growing up in homes filled with challenges, yet still come to school ready to learn and explore new ideas. My students live in a high poverty area where each student receives a free breakfast and lunch every day.
They are kind individuals who want nothing more than for each other to be successful.
They are incredibly smart, even though they may not realize it.
My Project
My students practice independent reading everyday in class. During this time, they are allowed to read a book of their choice. We have quite a few books to choose from in our classroom library, but most of the titles are dated or unfamiliar.
Students will be more interested in reading during class if they have access to titles they have heard of before.
I've learned in my short teaching career that students also love reading books that have been made into movies. They love making comparisons between the book and movie, which is why a lot of the titles chosen to be on this list are books that have been made into movies. It will be so easy for them to do this with "The Hunger Games," "Harry Potter," and "Divergent" books!
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because they will be more interested in reading independently and have more titles to choose from. Independent reading has a number of benefits such as increasing comprehension skills, building vocabulary, and improving writing skills; all of which we work on throughout the school year in my class.
