Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our classroom community, our students identities and needs are shared, honored, and appreciated.
Our elementary school is a bilingual immersion magnet academy in metropolitan Portland, Oregon.
Approximately half the students come from Spanish-speaking homes and half from English-speaking homes. About 50 percent of the students are low-income, qualifying for the federal free and reduced-price lunch program. All the kids are bused to school from around the district. Besides bilingualism, a major goal of the program is to promote intercultural understanding among the students. When students hear the stories of their peers they develop sensitivity and begin to see the commonalities in all our lives.
My Project
I am asking for Spanish and bilingual books that will fit the needs of my diverse students. In our dual language classroom we need more Spanish books in our library to support students reading levels, interests, and cultures. I have 28 students with all different needs and interests. These books will represent all those things for my classroom. These will give my students opportunity to enjoy reading in Spanish more.
Students deserve exposure to various literature to boost their reading.
These books will also allow students to improve their Spanish literacy and give them exposure to different genres. Students can take the books home from our classroom and read with their parents. My classroom library is not big enough to meet the needs of all of my students. Please help provide appropriate, and enjoyable reading material for my students.
