Help me give my students nurture a love for reading with 13 newly published books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach fifth grade in a Title I elementary school, in which 93% of the students are on a free or reduced priced lunch. Many of my students are from single-family homes, living with grandparents and/or family members with siblings or cousins in the home as well or with friends. Even though our state department of education provides allocation money for classroom supplies, I am still unable to purchase everything my students deserve and there are parameters on items that I can purchase with the funds.
My students love to read and I want them to have access to a wide variety of books. Research shows that that a print-rich environment, daily interaction with books, and access to multiple book genres create better readers.
Your donation will provide my students with daily access to 13 newly published book of popular series and different genres.
Every reader is different; different likes and different abilities. When you force kids to read what "you think they should read" or restrict them to books on a certain "level" reading is no longer an enjoyable task.
I never want to put restrictions on my students with "levels" or choosing books for them. I want them to to enjoy reading! Many book series you and I grew up reading are being reprinted as graphic novels...same concept as comic books. Authors are writing books with characters that today's youth can identify with.
I'm sad to say that even with the great children's books available today many of my students only have access to books in that are in our classroom and school library. This is due to families struggling to make ends meet; money is spent on the necessities of living. Also, many of my students are transported to and from school by bus due to the family not having a mode of transportation...therefore trips to the public library are few and far between or non-existent. Your donation will provide my students with newly 13 newly published books that will nurture the love of reading.
