Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My urban students are curious, resilient, and appreciative.
My urban middle school students are very diverse in their culture, income, and learning styles.
My school has over 70% free and reduced price lunch and over 20% of students are English Language Learners. We even have a few homeless students. Since these students do not always have the means to buy or access books, they really rely on the school to provide classroom libraries. My students need access to books so that they can enhance their reading skills. Many of them do not have the resources to go out and buy a book or get transportation to a library.
We also have many voracious readers who would love to take advantage of some new books. Some students are always asking if I have any new books to borrow. Former students also often visit and ask for recommendations or copies of new books.
My Project
Students have Sustained Silent Reading time every morning and several times per week per week in ELA. We started this practice a few years go and although at first there was resistance from some of my 7th grade students, we kept at it and had great success. As time passed, students not only got used to the routine of reading at the beginning of class, they began to look forward to it and some even asked for more time. Many of my students have become voracious readers and there are some titles that I can not keep on my shelves for more than a day. Many of the books are either donated from friends and family or purchased by me at a used book store. I know that if I am able to stock the bookshelves with brand new titles, the students would be even more excited to read. ALL of the titles that I requested come enthusiastically recommended by my students. A few students have requested books in Spanish which are included in this project. They have told me that they cannot wait to borrow these books once they come in.
Reading helps my students to become more critical thinkers, acquire new knowledge, and escape the pressures and stresses of their sometimes very difficult daily lives.
My lending library is always open and students can take any books that they want to home. This helps them become more enthusiastic readers but it also means that the library needs to be consistently updated because some books go missing. I have seen so many of my students' skills and grades improve since beginning our SSR reading routine. Promoting a love of reading for all of my students may be a lofty goal, but it is a worthy one
