My students are from Lewiston, Maine which is a notoriously low-income area. Many of my students come from low-income households. Lewiston is also a very diverse area. Many of my students were born in other countries, such as Angola, Djibouti, Somalia, and many others.
The class is a cohesive and supportive group.
The students pick each other up when they are down and support each other in their individual endeavors. My students are eager to learn and interested in learning in many different ways.
My Project
My students are quickly working their way through my classroom library. I have several books, but my students need more books to read. Many of my students like series books and unfortunately, I do not have as many series as they would like to read.
I have selected several series I have seen my current students and previous students reading and loving.
Additionally, I love sharing things that I liked when I was in fifth grade with my students, and picked some series that I read and loved when I was young. I decided that a mix of books I have seen them loving, plus books that I would love to share with them.
This will help my students because they will have even more books to read. My students have reading in another classroom with lots of books, but some books are really popular with all students and we do not have multiple copies of them. Giving my students more access to read these books will keep them excited about reading and reading more and more.
