When people think of Klein ISD, they often believe the misconception that we are a primarily white district. However, nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality, the student population in Klein ISD is diverse. I strive every day to celebrate the rich cultures and a wide range of backgrounds at our school.
No matter how different my students are, they are also the same in many ways because they all have their own personal struggles.
I teach sophomore English, and each student deserves to see their uniqueness acknowledged. Some of them have to learn a whole new language and assimilate to a culture that is vastly different from their own. Many of them juggle jobs and schoolwork to make ends meet. Family situations range from currently in foster care, to two-parent households, to divorced/remarried parents, to single parents.
But at the end of the day, all of my students need the same things: the love and compassion of a good teacher, and the knowledge that they are seen for who they truly are.
My Project
When people think of English class, they probably think of all the traditional classics that were written by primarily dead white men. And while those classics certainly have a place in our English teacher hearts, we know that our students deserve to be exposed to authors and characters that are as diverse as they are.
Representation matters, and purchasing these independent reading novels will help my students see themselves reflected in the literary world around them.
Each title was selected for either the diversity of its characters or of its author. These books show my students that reading can be both a window to another world and a mirror of their own lives.
