My library media center serves the entire population of our K-5 school. It is a hub for learning and serves 19 classes a week and an additional enrichment block for each grade level.
My students primarily come from a Navy background.
Our school is located in the middle of Navy housing and serves between 340 - 380 students at any given time. Over 60% of our school community receives free or reduced lunch. Regardless of frequent moves, our students and teachers are passionate and motivated to learn which lead us to winning a National Blue Ribbon for closing the achievement gap in 2016.
We offer several before and after school enrichment clubs including a CS-First Coding Club that I run each year. Our kids also love to read and are excited to get their hands on new library materials!
My Project
Students in our school look forward to coming to the library each week for a lesson and a book to borrow. They love story time and particularly enjoy books with humor that they can take home and read with their family. Mo Willems books are perfect for this! They are high-interest at a beginning reading level and will help to foster a love of reading while providing confidence at a young age.
Our Mo Willems books are so well-loved that they're falling apart.
Students are constantly asking if our library has any more Elephant and Piggie or Pigeon books and I have to tell them they're all gone. The look of disappointment on the students' faces breaks my heart.
With these new Mo Willems books, students will be able to read what they love and are excited about. We can even do an author study with these books and will be able to have enough for a whole class to check one out. These books will really make a difference to our students and will provide a wider range of easy reading for our beginning readers.
