I teach special education students year round. During the school year, I teach students in the resource room. All my students are about two years below in their reading levels, have different backgrounds, and needs. They all have outstanding personalities and are excited to learn. Reading and writing tend to be the hardest area for them and I don’t want them to feel frustrated when trying to participate in this “Battle of the Book” challenge. During the summer, I teach the extended school year program with students that need extra support in all areas. They are the loveliest children you will ever meet, that just want to learn.
My Project
These materials will help my students participate in a 5th grade reading challenge called, "Battle of the Books". This battle requires the 5th grade class to read six pre-selected books, such as Holes and Lightning Thief, which are at a higher reading level than they are reading at. Without these books on CD, I feel my students will get frustrated. I don't want them to get frustrated and give up because the reading is too hard. So I want to get them some of the battle books that are preselected and CD players so they can listen to the stories. My goal is for them to feel like they can accomplish this task. I want them to be part of this 5th grade reading activity because they are 5th graders and should not be excluded.
