This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is populated with energetic, creative, hardworking and fantastic fifth graders. My students spend the day working in various locations in the room as they collaborate, assist one another or move to a quiet location to focus on their project, investigation or assignment. The students have benefited from choice seating and the limited flexible seating I have been able to provide. This allows them to show responsibility and ownership of their behavior and academics as they gain self esteem. All of my students receive free or reduced price lunch and many live in poverty.
My Project
Currently during recess, we have a few students who play basketball and four square due to the limited equipment we have. Many students are hanging out sitting or playing tag. My students have expressed a desire to play different games but we don't have the equipment or a way to store more items. This equipment would open up options for the students to become more active.
Since we share a hallway with third and fourth graders, we would be able to share allowing all three grade levels to utilize this equipment during their recess time.
A cart would allow us to easily manage, use and store the equipment.
Most of the students in my school live in poverty. All the students in the school have free breakfast and lunch due to their socioeconomic situations. This has limited their exposure to different outside sports, games and activities.
